In celebration of NWA Gives Day on April 4, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is letting you get to know our staff, volunteers, and other team members through our "Turpentine Confidential" video series.
In this episode, Lisa Brinker, Communications Director and head of our advocacy program, shares why Shasta the tiger quickly became her favorite animal resident. Lisa also shares her story of volunteering at a pseudo-sanctuary in the past.
Like so many animal-lovers, Lisa was excited when an opportunity to make a difference at a "sanctuary" presented itself years ago. Sadly, when she began volunteering at the so-called sanctuary, she witnessed animals living in deplorable conditions, and it seemed that the actual care of the animals came second to making a profit. Disheartened and sickened, she left any fancies of working with exotic wildlife behind for a while, convinced that all sanctuaries were a sham.
Fast-forward to a job opportunity at TCWR presenting itself. Lisa's many years of experience and education in web design, public relations, photography, and videography made her an easy fit for the role, but was the role a good fit for her? She researched the Refuge heavily before applying then made the trip from Indiana to visit in-person for her interview.
The rest is history. TCWR completely changed Lisa's views of animal welfare by demonstrating itself to be a true sanctuary. The things she witnessed at the pseudo-sanctuary compelled her to take on our advocacy program and push for stricter laws regarding privatized big cat ownership in the U.S.
